    What is dual enrollment and how would it help me?

    Dual enrollment can help a student accelerate his or her educational goals, eliminate duplication between high school and college course content and increase the rigor and challenge of course offerings while in high school.

    Dual enrollment enables high school students to simultaneously earn both high school and college credits for a single course. For example, a student who successfully completes MAC 1105 College Algebra earns the student a full credit of high school mathematics as well as three college credits.

    What are the benefits of dual enrollment?

    • Dual enrollment gives students an idea of what full-time college coursework will be like. Students become familiar with the academic environment before he or she leaves the comfort and support of home.
    • Students have the opportunity to take classes that aren't offered at his or her high school.
    • College courses can give students a closer look at his or her area of academic interest.
    • Dual enrollment can help students find his or her area of interest before the pressure is on to declare a major.
    • The value in dollars of one semester of dual enrollment courses through Seacoast Collegiate High School is $2,236 (average based on a 17-hour schedule with books and fees) all available at no cost to public school students who meet the requirements.

    • Seacoast Collegiate High Schools provides full-time on-site support for the students at Northwest Florida State College.
    • Seacoast students have a community at Northwest Florida State College where they can hang out with other Seacoast students or have a quiet area to study.
    • Seacoast students have the opportunity to participate in team sports either at Seacoast or in sports teams at the school in which they are zoned to attend.

    Is dual enrollment right for everyone?

    Students should understand, however, that dual enrollment courses are college courses and the amount of work necessary to succeed in dual enrollment courses may be much greater than in high school courses. In addition, dual enrollment courses become a part of a student’s permanent college transcript and are calculated into the student’s permanent postsecondary GPA. It is important to do well in these courses to realize all the benefits of dual enrollment.

     

    Dual Enrollment Process

    Step 1:  Take the PERT test if you have not taken the ACT or SAT test and received passing scores.  To sign up for the PERT visit https://nwfsc.edu/academics/dual-enrollment/. 

    Passing scores for PERT are:

    Reading 106, Writing 103, Math 123

    Passing scores for ACT are:

    Reading 19, Writing 17, Math 21

    Passing scores for SAT are:

    Reading 24, Writing 25, Math 26.5
